VOICE LESSONS
My voice students include young beginners, adult avocational singers, advanced high school singers, and professional performers. They sing in a variety of styles, including classical, musical theater, and contemporary commercial music (CCM, or jazz, pop, rock, country, soul, etc.). I incorporate evidence-based tools from voice science, vocology, bel canto traditions, Alexander Technique, and other methods, customized for each singer.
Beginners and avocational singers of all ages work on developing healthy voice habits for a lifetime of singing. We establish healthy breath, posture, resonance, and artistry skills. We also work on introducing basic musicianship, ear training, and note reading. As they develop a tool-kit of skills, singers explore many genres and styles based on their interests and voice type. Very young singers are welcome to do a group lesson with a friend or two — a great way to develop singing skills is to sing with others.
Intermediate and advanced singers focus on specific goals, such as preparing for college musical theater or classical voice programs, learning a role, or re-learning good habits after recovering from an injury/illness. In addition to working on developing technical, musical, and artistic skills, we tailor the lessons to prepare for self tapes, in-person auditions, and building a diverse repertoire list of ready-to-perform songs.
Some students decide to participate in outside assessments like the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) student auditions, or Royal Conservatory of Music Exams. Studio recitals, school musicals, talent shows, open mics, and other performances are encouraged throughout the year.
